Free Art Classes: The Open Art Series

The Millcreek Arts Council is excited to introduce the Open Art Series, a new set of free pop-up art classes offered to the community three to four times throughout the year. Designed to be welcoming and accessible, each one-day class invites participants to explore creativity, learn new techniques, and connect through art. Art belongs to everyone.

Join Us on July 18th for a Free Botanical Printing Class with Becky Ruley

We will unleash the surprises nature has to offer by harnessing the natural pigments found in plants, leaves, flowers, and other natural materials to transfer designs permanently to fabric.  Applying heat and moisture will extract the natural intricate details, colors, and shapes of the leaves, and other botanical elements used.

This class will focus on basic techniques of botanical printing including preparing fabric and plant materials, arranging on fabric, as well as the process to set colors and image.  Participants will walk away with an 8″ x 54″ silk wool blend scarf and the knowledge to experiment on their own.

Students will also walk away with printed information regarding how to recognize suitable plants for printing, understanding the role of mordants and modifiers, how to steam bundles to set prints, and how to wash and handle printed fabric to preserve the design. *No prior experience necessary and all supplies are included.

Important details:

  • This class is free. If you are accepted and do not attend without canceling, you may be restricted from future classes.
  • Class is size is limited to 10 participants.
  • Participants must be Ages 12+
  • Each participant must complete their own registration form. There needs to be a unique email address for each applicant.
  • If you are unable to attend after registering, please return to Eventeny to delete your registration so another participant may join.
  • Accepted participants will be notified by email.
  • Please add Eventeny to your contact list to ensure you receive our notification.  
  • You will need to respond within 48 hours of class acceptance to be included in this class.
  • Class will be held on the 1st floor of the Millcreek Common building, 1354 E Chambers Ave, Millcreek, UT 84106
